throughout our state. Our hearts remain with those impacted by the May 24
tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde CISD, and we join the Tomball and
Cypress communities in mourning the members of the Collins family who lost
their lives on June 2. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">Following the Uvalde tragedy, Texas Gov. Greg
Abbott called for special legislative committees to be convened to prevent
future school shootings. The governor requested for recommendations to be made in
five key areas—school safety, mental health, social media, police training and
firearm safety. This summer, we will be reviewing all of our safety and
security measures in order to see if we are doing the best possible job of
protecting students and staff. However, I wanted to take some time to summarize
how CFISD has previously made efforts in each of these components.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>School safety<br />
</b>In 2011, CFISD formed its own law enforcement
agency to enhance safety and security throughout the district.</span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">The department, which recently celebrated its 10</span>th<span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">
anniversary, has expanded to more than 100 fully commissioned, well-trained officers
and has added four K-9s that specialize in narcotics and gunpowder / explosives
detection.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">The current assignment of officers is two per high
school, one per middle school and zoned support for elementary schools.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">During its June 13 meeting, the CFISD Board of
Trustees approved a budget that included funding for six additional police
officers to help expand districtwide patrol coverage.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">The
CFISD police department (</span><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">CFPD)’s upgraded telecommunication systems allow
the department to maintain close communication with neighboring law enforcement
agencies in the event of an emergency.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">The
CFPD monitors and patrols the district 365 days a year. In addition, CFISD police
dispatch can be reached 24/7 at 281-897-4337.</span></li></ul><p></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">In 2017, we expanded the office of emergency
management (OEM) to complement the CFPD.</span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">This department conducts districtwide security
audits to ensure all campuses are adequately prepared for emergencies.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">In 2018-2019, we worked with an outside consultant (True
North Consulting) to prepare for safety recommendations for the 2019 bond
program.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">The CFISD OEM implemented Navigate 360 technology
to house all campus floorplans and emergency operation plans (EOP) for quick
access in facilitating a coordinated emergency response with other emergency
response agencies and track emergency drills and training. The EOP also
outlines Traumatic Injury Response Protocol.</span></li></ul><p></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">The 2014 bond program dedicated $55 million to
safety and security upgrades including:</span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">secured vestibules at all campuses;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">bullet-resistant glass at front entrances;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">additional security cameras;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">lockdown panic buttons;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">card reader access locks; and</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">security intrusion panels.</span></li></ul><p></p>
<p><a name="_Hlk105162170"><span style="font-family: arial;">The 2019 bond program dedicated $207.6 million to even
more safety and security enhancements, including:</span></a></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">segmentation of open-concept floor plans in
elementary schools;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">fencing around portable buildings and playgrounds;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">classroom phones;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">impact-resistant glass on doors and high-traffic
areas;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">secure vestibule enhancements;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">replacement of classroom door hardware;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">addition of door prop alarms; and</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">additional lockdown buttons and card reader access
locks.</span></li></ul><p></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">We have
made significant progress on these projects; for example, classroom phones have
all been installed and campus fencing is scheduled for completion by the end of
the year. Major renovation projects including security upgrades are being
completed in seven phases, and the third phase is currently under construction.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">In 2018-2019, we implemented a clear backpack
policy for all secondary students as well as a clear bag policy for visitors to
Pridgeon and Cy-Fair FCU stadiums.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">All campuses have implemented procedures for
limiting entry points for faculty, students and visitors before and during the
instructional day as well as between main and portable buildings. Their
specific procedures are updated annually within the campus emergency operations
plan and submitted for review to CFPD and the OEM.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">The CFISD Safety and Security Committee was expanded
in 2018 to help plan for heightened security protocols while remaining in close
communication with district and campus leaders, as well as district and local
law enforcement agencies and first responders. The committee meets regularly
throughout the year.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Mental health<br />
</b><span style="color: #333333;">Through collaborations and
partnerships among three different departments—guidance and counseling, psychological
services and CFPD—the district mental health intervention team (MHIT) was
formed in 2018-2019.</span></span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">The MHIT is comprised of four licensed professional counselors,
two licensed psychologists and two mental health police officers.</span></li><li><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">This unique and creative team was established for the purpose of
developing a more proactive, targeted, and safe approach to dealing with mental
health issues in our district.</span></li></ul><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;"><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="font-family: arial;">We know that positive relationships are key in deterring potential
situations, and our counselors work to maintain these with students throughout
our campuses.</span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;"></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">Our </span><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">Board of Trustees approved an additional elementary counselor
allocation beginning in the 2020-2021 school year.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">Currently, CFISD has allocated 288 counseling positions. Depending
on enrollment, each elementary school has 2-3 counselors, each middle school
has 3-4 counselors and each high school has 8-9 counselors.</span></li><li><span style="color: #333333; font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">Other </span><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">initiatives
include Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) methodology and campus
mentoring programs.</span></li></ul><p></p>
<p class="Default"><span style="font-family: arial;">All campus staff are
required to complete mental health assessment training. CFISD elementary and
secondary counselors are trained on completing threat assessment interviews
using information compiled from recognized national curriculum. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Social media<br />
</b>Besides being available to respond in the time of a
crisis, CFPD officers provide many proactive measures, such as:</span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">investigating all potential threats;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">monitoring social media through a collaboration
with the Fusion Center;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">fielding </span><a href="https://www.cfisd.net/Page/1958" style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">Cy-Fair Tipline</a><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;"> reports;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">making home visits;</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">mentoring students; and</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">providing classroom presentations.</span></li></ul><p></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Campus administrators, CFPD and our student
services department routinely investigate social media tips and threats, and
our students are continually reminded that if they <b>see something, say
something! <o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Police training<br />
</b>The CFPD routinely undergoes annual training and
professional development for all officers and command staff, adapting to the
latest state and local law enforcement standards.</span></p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">CFPD officers have attended “Advanced Law
Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT)” and have also completed the state-mandated
“TCOLE Active Shooter Response For School-Based Law Enforcement (#2195)
Training,” and many officers will complete the trainings this summer.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">In addition, officers train yearly for “Use
of Force/Active Shooter” incidents and often use campuses. This summer,
officers will attend an active shooter response refresher course.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">In the summer of 2021, the OEM held “Active
Incident Training” for CFPD officers.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">The OEM also conducted a “Reunification
Functional Exercise” for a CFISD campus in the spring of 2022. This functional
exercise is planned for all CFISD campuses.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">All CFPD officers will join health services
staff in becoming certified in “Stop the Bleed” training, and will train campus
staff during August professional development week to prepare for bleeding
emergencies.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial; text-indent: -0.25in;">All officers are trained in ALERRT’s
“Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events,” or CRASE, and will provide the
training to all campus staff in August.</span></li></ul><p></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Firearm safety<br />
</b>In addition to the CFPD’s regular internal training
on firearm safety, the district posts signage outside of every campus reminding
the public that firearms are not permitted on CFISD property. Campuses received
updated signage the last week of school that will be displayed in time for the
2022-2023 school year.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">As
we have demonstrated over the last decade, CFISD will continue to review and
evaluate and determine further safety and security enhancements and/or
modifications that are needed moving forward.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">We
are determined to keep our schools the safest possible environments for
students and staff.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

books. Our students, staff and community bounced back from a topsy-turvy two
years with one of our strongest finishes yet.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: "Source Sans Pro",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">On Saturday, we will conclude 12 graduation
ceremonies at the Berry Center—all back indoors for the first time since 2019.
By the time we are done, nearly 9,000 graduating seniors will walk the stage.
This includes 195 College Academy graduates, who simultaneously earned
associate’s degrees along with their high school diplomas. Way to go, grads!<o:p></o:p></span></p>

a school campus unfolds, I extend my sincerest sympathy to the community of Uvalde,
Texas, dealing with this tragedy.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">We want our schools to be the safest places our
students and staff can be. CFISD continually reviews emergency procedures and
protocols. We will remain on high alert with greater visibility of CFISD police
officers and administrators for the next two days. We encourage students to
report any suspicious behaviors to a staff member or to the CFISD Tipline. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">Several of our schools have already distributed
resources to parents and guardians who are deciding how to share this news with
their children. Our guidance and counseling department has provided some
articles that should provide guidance:<o:p></o:p></span></p>

I am proud to say that CFISD has continued that effort. We have been able to recruit, retain and promote an outstanding team that not only reflects the community, but has achieved success recognized by the nation and state.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">CFISD is more committed than ever to continue to recruit educators who reflect our district’s demographics.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">We now have leadership teams at the district and campus level that more reflect our community. That has opened up access to professionals from all different backgrounds.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Our minority educators have added great value to our district. down the days until semester break, I want to express my gratitude for
everyone’s extraordinary efforts to promote student success while dealing with
an ongoing challenging situation. I am continually grateful to be part of a
community that supports its employees, and employees who rally around students
to give them as normal of an educational experience as possible.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Earlier this
week, I watched the news coverage of a tornado that struck western Kentucky and
the devastating loss of life that took place. My heart was broken for the Mayfield,
Ky., community, and I began to reflect on how thankful and grateful I am. It is
easy to get caught up into day-to-day problems, but if we think about our
blessings, we usually come out on the plus side.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Our CFISD
students continue to be a blessing to others. It has made me so proud to see student
groups participating in the act of holiday giving, whether it is donating to an
organization such as Toys for Tots or singing carols to senior citizens at a
retirement home. Let’s celebrate our young people who understand the meaning of
the season!</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhPcfHup0yuTwHJKq-9a2gtYLWG89SijIFPk3alM5QPzfUlt3Va0Ov00Z2L5cAXZfkJgViyu8erG9-xjxMJKnYqIeoclqA2vGk-mNnIczdiZYlNB2jtRXGxc9jE1fxm7NOyEjM10BRnArn80yX_qbuGvdVYZhH-Wp_j2-aZZAh_nj07XBU8Mdb-7Ao=s400" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="208" data-original-width="400" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhPcfHup0yuTwHJKq-9a2gtYLWG89SijIFPk3alM5QPzfUlt3Va0Ov00Z2L5cAXZfkJgViyu8erG9-xjxMJKnYqIeoclqA2vGk-mNnIczdiZYlNB2jtRXGxc9jE1fxm7NOyEjM10BRnArn80yX_qbuGvdVYZhH-Wp_j2-aZZAh_nj07XBU8Mdb-7Ao=w400-h208" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEheCN9mS4_H0Q7NXi89MXC1MvopbUJb9S0O8CSnQlf2Z_soJxsf92oiDrZxzb8trr4etxe-Hpti6tz6DT_aI1oZSEcruxcT3tI-irGmxzWaXlDHHRQecQmLdVVabQp0WqEqKKGHoGteE8mfnsZpzIPj1ctELaGy5GjYDJkCHUf2IiR-CYupI9_vGCI=s400" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="400" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEheCN9mS4_H0Q7NXi89MXC1MvopbUJb9S0O8CSnQlf2Z_soJxsf92oiDrZxzb8trr4etxe-Hpti6tz6DT_aI1oZSEcruxcT3tI-irGmxzWaXlDHHRQecQmLdVVabQp0WqEqKKGHoGteE8mfnsZpzIPj1ctELaGy5GjYDJkCHUf2IiR-CYupI9_vGCI=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p>I hope you

reflective of all that I have to be thankful for. Family, friends, faith and
good health are all near the top of the list, but right behind those blessings
is this incredible school district. I am grateful to serve as your
superintendent, where I have had a front-row seat for so much growth and
achievement over the last 11 years.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">I am proud of what we have already accomplished in
the 2021-2022 school year. Students and staff have responded tremendously to so
many changes to their routines over the last couple of years, yet still
continue to perform at a high level. Parents have also been instrumental to
student success, and we have been happy to welcome you back for many more
on-campus activities. Thank you all for your patience through a challenging
time.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">At the beginning of this school year, I gave our
district leaders and staff a three-word challenge, <i>Check Your Corners</i>,
which served as a reminder to check on students, colleagues and families who
may need additional help. We also want to make sure we take a personal
inventory of how we can improve ourselves. Three months into the school
year, I have been so pleased with everyone’s additional efforts to make our
campuses and district stronger. Although the work isn’t complete, I want to
thank all of our staff for giving <i>a
little extra, on purpose</i> (that’s <i>lagniappe</i>!)
to help CFISD achieve its full potential. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">This next
week, I encourage you to take some “you” time. Surround yourself with those you
love, eat and be merry, rest your mind and body and count your blessings. Enjoy
your Thanksgiving break, and I look forward to welcoming you back on Nov. 29 as
we finish the semester strong.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

joint general and special elections is <b>Monday, Oct</b>.<b> 4</b>. Our CFISD
community has done a great job over the last decade of developing a culture of
voting, and registering to vote is the first step in that essential civic
process.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">Detailed information on how to register to vote can
be found on the <a href="https://www.votetexas.gov/register/index.html">Vote Texas website</a>. Many of you may
already be registered; if you aren’t sure, access the Am I Registered? link from
the Vote Texas page.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">Early voting in Harris County begins on <b>Oct. 18 </b>and
continues through <b>Oct. 29</b>. Election Day is set for <b>Tuesday</b>, <b>Nov.
2</b>. Harris County Elections Administrator Isabel Longoria’s website, <a href="http://www.harrisvotes.com/">harrisvotes.com</a>, has many resources to prepare you for election season. There are many
important issues and positions on the ballot, including the <a href="http://www.cfisd.net/boardelection">CFISD Board
of Trustees Election</a>. Elections closer to where we live have a greater impact
on our lives. I encourage you to research the candidates and express your
constitutional right to vote for the person you choose. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Thank you to everyone in the community who has
helped support a culture of voting. One of these groups, the League of Women
Voters – Cy-Fair, holds voter registration drives at our high schools for
students 18 and older. Kudos to our youngest voters for taking advantage of a
great American freedom—voting! <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0in;"><o:p><span style="font-family: arial;"> </span></o:p></p>
<p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">There is still time to ensure you take advantage of
that freedom. Register to vote by <b>Monday, Oct</b>. <b>4 </b>to make your
voice heard in 2021. </span><span style="font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><i><br /></i></span></p><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><i>~ Mark Henry, Ed.D.</i></span></p>Cypress-Fairbanks ISDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17206458360654752813noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-500246404485754162.post-62461973055992675722021-06-03T15:30:00.003-05:002021-06-03T16:10:58.958-05:00We made it!<p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://www.cfisd.net/download_file/35004">Español</a></span><o:p></o:p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Today marks the conclusion of an eventful and
successful 2020-2021 school year. I can think of no better representation of
what has been accomplished this year than the celebration of our Class of 2021
graduates. After tomorrow, we will have had more than 9,000 graduating seniors walk
the stage at the Berry Center and Cy-Fair FCU Stadium—their joyous reactions
tell the story!</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDPBvliecXpQC9Mp12k2niyaYuP1ljyc-Qx5YsNKapY9cJje-OjSfgImlaL4WdPwHYTz-6BiY9Yp9I-MGJ7fQbAX6LJtVjofKFOvjFcQV5AGJfhNoGrhV-zC3TtSF2HYbhRLrmmvrmM2c/s500/210603+supt+message.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="333" data-original-width="500" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDPBvliecXpQC9Mp12k2niyaYuP1ljyc-Qx5YsNKapY9cJje-OjSfgImlaL4WdPwHYTz-6BiY9Yp9I-MGJ7fQbAX6LJtVjofKFOvjFcQV5AGJfhNoGrhV-zC3TtSF2HYbhRLrmmvrmM2c/w400-h266/210603+supt+message.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">I want to thank all of our parents and community
members for being supportive as we navigated through the frequently changing
environment of a worldwide pandemic. All of the efforts of our teachers and
staff, coupled with your support, paid off as students were able to enjoy a sense
of normalcy throughout the school year. Whether it was academics, fine arts or
other activities, I consistently noticed the beaming smiles from our learners
as they got back to doing what they loved. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">In my April letter, I highlighted many of the
student achievements from the school year, and we’re still not done yet! This

but I am so proud of our staff, students and parents for staying on track to
finish the year strong.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial;">We celebrated many successes this year, and chief
among them in a year marked by COVID-19 safety protocols was keeping our
schools open throughout. After three months of solely virtual learning in the
spring of 2020, we knew how critical it would be to find a way to provide a
consistent education for our face-to-face and virtual learners alike this
school year.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiddT107iMIL91PX_23xHDYuKmvoSuN65NucNdSHlxOv5bDl-Kj0QbINYe8ueobSCcDvg9uXmKZdJ6ti0Dp-JLVcM7A4DzamLG0kqbNaziCdimKPJUkov1ah9fR0Eaepkq7DQ2Arzp8Dqg/s783/210419+supt+message+1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="522" data-original-width="783" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiddT107iMIL91PX_23xHDYuKmvoSuN65NucNdSHlxOv5bDl-Kj0QbINYe8ueobSCcDvg9uXmKZdJ6ti0Dp-JLVcM7A4DzamLG0kqbNaziCdimKPJUkov1ah9fR0Eaepkq7DQ2Arzp8Dqg/s320/210419+supt+message+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><p></p><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Next week, on April 27, we will celebrate the

runner-up, the Cypress Woods boys’ swim team placed third in state, and the
Jersey Village High School boys’ soccer team made the state semifinals—the best
finish of any soccer program in CFISD history. This weekend, we will host the
state wrestling tournament at the Berry Center and hope to have more CFISD

our enrollment in these excellent programs. Registration is also open for CFISD
summer school programs, which are available for all students at no cost. We are
hopeful that more summer offerings will allow students impacted by learning challenges
during the pandemic a better chance to get ahead. <o:p></o:p></span></p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">It has been extremely encouraging to see the rapid
rollout of coronavirus vaccinations throughout the nation. I have seen so many
teachers and staff posting their immunizations on social media, and I am
grateful that the majority of our workforce will have vaccines as we head into
the summer. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">With the 2021-2022 school year approaching, we have
not yet decided if there will be a virtual learning option. Based on current law, CFISD
would not receive state funding for a virtual education option unless the commissioner
of education extends the current waiver or legislation passes this session to
provide state funding to school districts to offer a virtual education option.
I will update our school community if and when there are any changes.
However, since vaccines are becoming more readily available and the spread of
COVID-19 is diminishing, the districtwide mask mandate will be lifted starting
June 7. Although they will be optional, we will continue to encourage staff,
students and visitors to wear masks while indoors. We will also continue to
follow many of the safety protocols currently in place, including enhanced
cleaning procedures and increased air filtration and ventilation.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p><span style="background: white;"><span style="font-family: arial;">
</span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">It is easy to see why I am so proud to be a part of
this incredible school district. We have indeed come a long way in 2020-2021,
and we are not done yet. As we reflect on the achievements behind us, let’s zero
in on the goal ahead of us and finish strong.</span><span face="Source Sans Pro, sans-serif" style="font-size: 11pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><i>~ Mark Henry, Ed.D.</i></span></p>Cypress-Fairbanks ISDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17206458360654752813noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-500246404485754162.post-78659018422380163822021-02-22T17:00:00.002-06:002021-02-22T17:00:22.284-06:00Winter weather event update #5<p><span style="font-family: arial;">Districtwide
repairs have continued around the clock since I wrote to you yesterday. We have
made significant progress to restore facilities in time for students to return
to school on Tuesday, Feb. 23.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">The
City of Houston lifted its boil-water notice yesterday along with many of the
municipal utility districts (MUDs) that serve our community. Although some
campuses remain in boil-water notice zones, <i>all </i>schools will have
potable water available for students and staff. We have made additional
arrangements for the campuses still impacted by boil-water notices to have
boxed lunches and bottled water available for students. In addition, hand
sanitizing stations are located throughout each school and in every classroom.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Campuses
are looking forward to welcoming students back tomorrow, either in-person or
through CFISD Connect remote instruction. Although the winter weather caused a
lot of disruptions in our community, we are glad to be able to safely reopen
our schools tomorrow. </span><span style="font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;"><i>~ Mark Henry, Ed.D.</i></span></p>Cypress-Fairbanks ISDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17206458360654752813noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-500246404485754162.post-730399673410847212021-02-21T14:00:00.002-06:002021-02-21T20:53:03.125-06:00Winter weather event update #4<p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://www.cfisd.net/download_file/33784">Español</a></span><span style="font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The last week has certainly
been a whirlwind, but I have been encouraged by the progress that has already
been made to resume the 2020-2021 school year.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Our facilities, maintenance
and operations teams have continued to work around the clock to assess, clean
and disinfect, and make repairs to district facilities in order to prepare them
for students this week. Their efforts will continue throughout the weekend to
ensure buildings are accessible and safe for staff and students. There has been
some positive momentum with local boil-water notices, as more municipal utility
districts (MUDs) are lifting the notices that impact many CFISD campuses. While
some notices are still in place, we plan to know more information by Monday
afternoon and will provide an update at that time.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">We look forward to welcoming
employees back for the staff work day on Monday, Feb. 22 and students back to
school on Tuesday, Feb. 23. It has taken a lot of teamwork and manpower to get
CFISD up and running, and I am thankful for an outstanding workforce and
community that has made it possible.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><i>~ Mark Henry, Ed.D.</i></span></p>Cypress-Fairbanks ISDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17206458360654752813noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-500246404485754162.post-64152671776557476182021-02-20T14:00:00.010-06:002021-02-20T14:15:43.976-06:00Winter weather event update #3<p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://www.cfisd.net/download_file/view/33780/261">Español</a></span><span style="font-family: Source Sans Pro, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">I wanted to provide you another
update with additional information that we have learned since my letter to you
yesterday. Although we are all eager to welcome our students back to school, there
are a number of concerns we are still addressing across the district.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">While power has become much
more reliable in the last day, potable water continues to be an issue. Mayor
Turner announced late yesterday that the City of Houston could be on a boil-water
notice until possibly Monday. In addition, a large number of our campuses are
located in municipal utility districts (MUDs) that have boil-water notices. We
suffered total food loss at many of our schools. As I shared with you
yesterday, several of our campuses sustained major water damage. In addition, one-fifth
of our portable buildings were negatively impacted. Our maintenance and
operations teams continue to work diligently to address the issues and make
repairs. Damage to Swenke Elementary School was extensive, and a separate
communication will be shared later today regarding plans for our Swenke students
and staff.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">After much discussion, we have
decided that <b>Monday, Feb. 22 will be a staff work day</b> (no student
instruction either on-campus or remote). <b>On-campus instruction and CFISD
Connect remote learning will resume on Tuesday, Feb. 23. </b>Extracurricular
activities resumed today and will continue next week as previously scheduled.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Not only will Monday provide
us with an extra day for water quality to improve across the district, but it
will also allow more time for our nutrition services team to restock food that
was lost, maintenance and operations teams another day to repair damaged
facilities, and teachers time to get into their classrooms and assess any
damage they may have incurred to their instructional materials or classroom
technology before students return.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Thank
you for your continued support during this trying time, as I know many of you
are dealing with your own challenges this week regarding water damage. We will
continue to monitor and assess the situation throughout the district, and I
will provide you with another update tomorrow.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

brief update following yesterday’s communication to the community.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Our CFISD police officers and
facilities, maintenance and operations teams have continued to conduct building
assessments and make repairs. More than 60 of our campuses sustained some level
of water damage, with three schools suffering major damage. Many facilities are
in excellent condition but have portable buildings that sustained damage to
plumbing. We are also monitoring the availability of potable water, as numerous
schools are currently in areas with boil-water alerts. While we had to dispose
of many campus food supplies, our nutrition services team is confident that we
will have sufficient food and beverages available for all students by Feb. 22.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Our
operations team is collaborating with external contractors to get facilities up
and running for students on Monday. Our
goal continues to be to bring students back to campuses on Monday, but we need
everyone to plan for the possibility of either a remote learning day for
students or a staff work day (and no remote learning) on Monday.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">As
you know, we missed four days of student instruction last week, during a year
when we have already lost so much time. While we are very thankful to have a
waiver for those days, we know that there is much remediation that needs to
occur in the 15 available instructional days between now and spring break.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">We
will continue to monitor the situation and assess the ability to provide
on-campus instruction on Monday. I will provide you with another update
tomorrow, and a final decision will be made regarding Monday no later than 2
p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Thank
you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented
statewide winter freeze event. We know it is a stressful time for many of you.

has been a very difficult week for Texas and our community.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Extended
below-freezing temperatures and resulting power outages throughout our state
and region took their toll. Many of you were without heat and water for longer
than anyone should have to endure. Ruptured pipes caused damage to many CFISD
facilities and impacted countless employees’ and community members’ homes. The
impact of the destruction from this unprecedented freeze will be felt for weeks
and months to come.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">In
addition to the water damage, many schools’ food supplies were completely lost
due to the sustained outages. Combined with the fact that several campuses are
in areas where there was unreliable water service, we felt that it was best to
close our schools this week in order to allow more time for recovery and
restoration.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">I am
very thankful for our outstanding maintenance and operations teams, who have
already made great progress with inspection, clean-up and repairs that will
continue throughout the weekend. Kudos to all the staff members working
overtime to help us safely resume our school year as soon as possible. We are still
hopeful that we will be able to return on Monday.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuDPVZvfxQzBeGJbrDEcI8vffsHajGQrxEWEVkAlKyMLPhWPMRTh7mKR6hc8lbmSm6UNXFRiQdKu2OWTZL0gId9GvGDVrOMDU7MO0yZgYxqu2yuABxHlmuj9tBlULFNxxMtiDXOZaeqEY/s800/210218+supt+message+1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="533" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuDPVZvfxQzBeGJbrDEcI8vffsHajGQrxEWEVkAlKyMLPhWPMRTh7mKR6hc8lbmSm6UNXFRiQdKu2OWTZL0gId9GvGDVrOMDU7MO0yZgYxqu2yuABxHlmuj9tBlULFNxxMtiDXOZaeqEY/s320/210218+supt+message+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt1UiNyeNOBui76dzIxGzodjhaSUXygGkc5V2_vTJjXsI8Iaud4vXJWcVm9fT975_KMPorNlMlZAvJ-KK4FvAyR7Qt3mKwO3fDPNZP-xrjNWI99LdAZFi5akZcUi9U61CpvrcOzpc0sYM/s800/210218+supt+message+2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="533" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt1UiNyeNOBui76dzIxGzodjhaSUXygGkc5V2_vTJjXsI8Iaud4vXJWcVm9fT975_KMPorNlMlZAvJ-KK4FvAyR7Qt3mKwO3fDPNZP-xrjNWI99LdAZFi5akZcUi9U61CpvrcOzpc0sYM/s320/210218+supt+message+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">We received
confirmation from Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath that
CFISD will receive a waiver for the missed instructional days, exempting us

instruction, we will make sure our students catch up while providing additional
support for those who need it. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">I
don’t need to tell you how challenging of a school year this has already been
without the added stressor of this devastating winter weather event. My heart
goes out to all of you who have spent the last week bundled up inside your
homes, scrambling to find clean water or ripping out carpet and sheetrock. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">I
continue to be proud of this community and the resilience and support for each
other you show amid the hardest of times. I will never forget your amazing
response following the widespread flood damage after Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
We made it through that tough time then and emerged stronger as a community. I
know we will overcome this together as well. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

always so proud to be a part of this community, and never more so than when we rise
up together in the face of adversity. I will never forget the immense support
you gave to so many who lost their homes and possessions following Hurricane
Harvey flooding in 2017. When we had to unexpectedly close schools last spring
due to COVID-19, you all stepped up in one way or another to meet the needs of
CFISD students.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">And
here again, as 2020 draws to a close, I stand amazed at the incredible
undertaking that our first semester of hybrid instruction has been. Students,
staff and parents have been asked to stretch the limits of their flexibility,
and they have done so admirably. This has been a learning process for everyone,
we’ve all made adjustments along the way, but we have reached the halfway point
of this uncharted journey of 2020-2021. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">As we
enter this season of gift-giving, I want to give a special shout-out to all of
our school personnel who have gone above and beyond to make this school year
possible. From distributing curbside meals to disinfecting learning spaces to
delivering remote and in-person instruction, our campus all-stars rose to the
occasion to meet the needs of 115,000 students. We are forever in their debt. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">To
help brighten the season for these school heroes, let’s show them how <b>School
Personnel are a Gift</b>. Download our graphic <a href="https://www.cfisd.net/download_file/32739/0">here</a>,
then post it to social media and tag the person you wish to recognize. Use the

reasons I sent my children to public school is I knew they would be surrounded
by a diverse community that better reflects what the world looks like. I truly
believe that they are more understanding people because they went to school

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At noon today, Gov. Greg Abbott
<b>extended the closure of all Texas
schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year; however, distance
learning will continue</b>. While I am disappointed that we will not be able to
close out the school year in ways that we usually do, we must follow the
directives issued by the governor so that we can safely come back together
sometime soon. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here are
some of our key priorities as we continue to navigate the challenges brought
about by COVID-19:</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<ul>
<li><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;"><u>Learning at Home</u></i><u style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;"> program</u><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">: Although our
classrooms are empty, we are committed to supporting student learning through
the dedication of our campus staff and teachers as they connect with their
students and provide additional instructional support. The CFISD </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">Learning at Home</i><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;"> program will continue
to be enriched and enhanced each week.</span></li>
<li><u style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">Curbside Meals</u><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">: We will continue to provide Curbside Meals each
weekday at 19 campuses. To date, CFISD has provided more than 400,000 meals to our
students.</span></li>
<li><u style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">Class of 2020 seniors</u><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">: </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Like you, I am
holding out hope that graduations will be held in May or on our alternative dates in July. Gov. Abbott
indicated today that Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath would soon
provide details about how school districts should proceed and how they could
conduct graduation ceremonies. We will provide you with more information once
available.</span></li>
<li><u style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">Grading, GPA and semester averages</u><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">: Now that it is
certain we will not be returning to in-class instruction this school year, we
will finalize plans regarding grade calculations and communicate this to you
soon.</span></li>
<li><u style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">Student and staff items</u><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">: Campuses will be developing and
communicating a plan with you on when you may return to campus to retrieve
personal belongings safely.</span></li>
<li><u style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">UIL</u><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.25in;">: In response to the extended closure of Texas schools, the
UIL has suspended all practices and contests (extracurricular academic,
athletic and music) for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our departments and campuses
will continue to take your calls between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through
Friday, as well as through email. On behalf of all of the staff in CFISD, we
miss you and look forward to the time when we can safely be together again. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
